Insurance Claims in the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

They’re calling Hurricane Helen and its impacts around Western North Carolina the kind of storm event that happens only once in 500 years--our beloved communities have been completely devastated.  The attorneys and staff at Asheville Legal are all grieving the incalculable losses that have piled up, both during the storm and in the aftermath.

As the shock of the immediate damage--and the attendant threats to health and safety--begins to subside, we will begin the difficult and much slower task of recovering from this disaster, both with repairs to our property and from the financial setbacks as well.

Insurance claims are already being filed, assessed, adjusted, and paid out all over North Carolina.  This can be a difficult and stressful process, but here at Asheville Legal, we are well versed in the details of property coverage policies, and we are highly familiar with the process that goes into adjusting an insurance claim.  We also contract with a restoration professional who is well-versed in writing estimates for maximizing insurance coverage, and we can also link you up with restoration professionals who are well equipped to actually carry out your repairs.

If you are going through a claim adjustment, the single, most important advice we can give you at this time is to get every important position in writing from your insurance adjuster.  Remember that insurance companies, as profit centers, have a vested interest in seeking out ways to deny or underpay your insurance claim.  Every penny you get, is a penny against their bottom line.  In our experience, adjusters could end up telling you things in person or by phone that they are not willing to put into writing, because they know it’s wrong.

There are many other things to know about the insurance process--including your obligations to try and mitigate damages to your property, to cooperate with the insurance adjusters, and to not hide information from them.  Many policies are difficult to understand, and also have a complex web of exclusions (there are often exclusions for flood damage and mold), and it can at times be difficult to determine whether, and to what extent, a given loss might be covered.

If you are dealing with a difficult insurance claim in the aftermath of Hurricane Helenes, then we recommend giving the insurance claim attorneys at Asheville Legal a call today, or filling out our contact form.  Thank you.
